TIGRE BROCANTE

Portrait, TIGRE BROCANTE

Japanese brand founded on February 25, 1998 in the Yakuin district of Fukuoka, on the island of Kyushu. Parent company: 株式会社天空丸 (Tenkumaru), headed by Masamoto Nozaki (野崎 正光). The name is a double French-Japanese nod: 1998 was the Year of the Tiger in the Japanese zodiac calendar, combined with "brocante" (French for flea-market antiques), a reference to European antique dealers (the original store was decorated with old European furniture).

Tigre Brocante embodies a broader textile fusion: Japanese traditions of indigo dyeing, mud dyeing, and antique weaving on traditional looms, crossed with craftsmanship from India, Thailand, and Nepal. Visual vocabulary: reworked European workwear, patchwork, natural dyes, an earthy palette, a "brocante" spirit, garments that evoke a worked-in nostalgia while staying wearable for everyday adult life.

Representative of the Japanese slow fashion / heritage movement of the late 1990s, running parallel to 45rpm but with a more pan-Asian DNA. Still active today, low-profile outside Japan but cult status among enthusiasts of Japanese and Asian artisanal fashion.
