LIMI FEU

Portrait, LIMI FEU

« I was so overcome, I just started crying.

Limi Yamamoto, born in 1974, is the daughter of Yohji Yamamoto. She later adopted the stage name "Feu" ("fire" in French), a word found at random in a dictionary, almost a child's game.

A childhood far from her father. Her parents divorced when she was two. She grew up with her mother in a small town in Kyushu, seeing Yohji only about once every three years. Fashion then seemed a foreign world.

The revelation. In her final year of school, Yohji took her to New York to see one of his shows. For the first time, she saw her father's work on the runway. "I was so overcome, I just started crying." On the spot, she decided to become a designer.

Training and launch. She studied at Bunka Fashion College, then worked as a pattern-maker at several fashion houses. In 2000, she founded her own label Limi feu under the wing of the Yohji Yamamoto group. She showed at Tokyo Fashion Week from 2000 to 2007, then made her Paris Fashion Week debut in October 2007, to a very warm critical reception.

Aesthetic: structured tailoring, feminine asymmetries, a palette dominated by black, loose silhouettes and combat boots, a punk-rock romanticism more grounded than her father's. Limi puts it this way: "My father designs for the ideal woman. I design, as a woman, for the real woman."
